     Hiring the Herd

How it Works

Goats eat the green vegetation...you keep the sticks.

  • We will be glad to come to your site to evaluate your vegetation, talk with you about your needs, and give you a free estimate for the entire job. You can be added to the calendar right then.

  • An email noting the specifics of the job (like vegetation you would like controlled, the vegetation that we are not to touch, how long it should take, and cost) will be written and sent to you. Satellite imaging will be used to determine the square footage of the area to be managed

  • The first day (usually Monday), we will set up the electric net fence. Half payment is due at this time.

  • The next day, will we bring the herd goats in the morning.  Greedy Goats will eat, and eat, and eat. A Goatherd will sit and watch them the whole time. And, in the afternoon when they are sooo full that they just can't, we will take them back to their barn...until the next morning.

  • We will do this daily until the area looks great, then the fence will be removed, and all you will have will be bare stems and biodegradable goat fertilizer where the undergrowth used to be.

  • Final payment is due at this time.

How Much Does it Cost?

Our service is divided in to the "Quick-Fix" and the "Long-Term".

Quick-fix Goal--immediately clear unwanted leafy vegetation from an area from 5" down to 5' up. Only the stems, branches, and root balls will be left. This takes about one week per 10,000 sq ft. (one quarter acre) When the goats are gone, the leaves will be, too. Area is ready for stump removal, or to leave as you wish. The shrubbery will be left stunted for the rest of the year.

Long-term Goal--kill unwanted vegetation from an area. Stems, branches, and root balls will be dead. This is intensive grazing 2 times per year for three years. Each time goats are applied to an area, the bush's and vine's root balls get smaller. By the 6th consecutive application of goats, the roots should be dead.  Ask about scheduling on a yearly basis.

The cost to rent the herd is .05 cents per square foot, with a $150 mobilization fee, and $25 per fence set up fee. If we need to clear land to set up the electric fence, add an extra $25 per hour for human labor. If the area is especially tall and dense there may be an extra vertical charge.  Out of area will have a $.26 per mile charge.  Price begins at $225 for 1,000f ²

We use satellite imagery with great accuracy to determine the size of the area to be worked. All grassy areas will be excluded.

How Often will I need the Goats?

Goats are the first tool that allows you access to your project.

It is true that the goats will eat the leafy vegetation and many twig tips, but vegetation is always growing...no matter what your means of control, and goats are just a good first-tool that can be used to combat the ever-growing jungle that is trying to overtake us! Goats can give that much needed push to start in on that overgrown area to help you start getting it under control, but the unwanted vegetation will return until you remove the roots and re-plant with more desirable greenery.
